The implementation of December’s tax reform legislation will trigger significant cuts to social service programs in order to offset the deficit-raising consequences of the corporate tax cuts.  And these cuts are in addition to the cuts already proposed in President Trump’s 2018 budget.  Programs and services that help families and provide safety nets for our most vulnerable neighbors are at risk — things like healthcare, schools, housing, food assistance, job training and child care.

These federal decisions affect Rhode Island state government spending, and both will have potentially devastating consequences for families in the Ocean State.  With the help of local and national experts, this funder session will help make sense of the real life implications of budgetary allocations.

We will begin with a livestreamed federal budget overview with Bob Greenstein, from the Center on Budget Policy and Priorities, sponsored by Grantmakers Income Security Taskforce.  Then we have a discussion with local experts on the Rhode Island budget implications of both state and federal budgets.

Local experts will include Rachel Flum, Economic Progress Institute; Elizabeth Burke Bryant, RI Kids Count; and Emily Eelman, RI EOHHS and formerly from OMB at the White House.
